My Statement on the American Health Care Act

I was disappointed the House did not vote to repeal and replace Obamacare Friday afternoon. While I wasn’t happy with some aspects of this bill, I believed it was the best option we had for actually repealing Obamacare. I’m hopeful that the House or Senate will come up with a better plan that can pass. I will do everything I can to keep my promise to repeal Obamacare. Since I came to Congress, I have voted more than 65 times to repeal, replace, or modify Obamacare.

Discussing OPEN Data and Data Transparency
Last week, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing to discuss bipartisan, bicameral legislation to open up government data to improve services and support new discoveries in the private sector. Included in this discussion was a bill Rep. Derek Kilmer and I plan on reintroducing, the OPEN Government Data Act. This common-sense legislation will require the government to publish all non-sensitive data online in an open-source, easily accessible, machine-readable format by default. It also protects privacy and national security information when making federal government data available to the public and requires federal agencies to use data to improve decision making. Today, we can’t even imagine the diverse applications developers might find to make folks’ lives easier as this trove of federal data becomes accessible.
