Congressman Farenthold Statement on Red Snapper Season Extension
Congressman Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) issued the following statement Wednesday in response to the Department of Commerce extending the federal red snapper season. The Department of Commerce release can be found here.
“Recreational red snapper fishing is important to the economy of Gulf Coast towns and the many people who enjoy fishing,” said Congressman Farenthold. “I am happy the work my Gulf Coast colleagues and I did with the new leadership at the Department of Commerce and state officials to make this happen was so successful.”
The federal red snapper season will now be extended to Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Labor Day. The 3rd and 4th of July will also be recreational red snapper days. The Department of Commerce announced this in exchange for getting rid of the state week day fishing days.
Prior to this change, the 2017 red snapper season was three days from June 1st to June 4th.
