Reacting to the Massacre in Las Vegas

Sunday night, America faced a horrible atrocity in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire on a country music festival from a room in the Mandalay Bay Hotel, killing more than 50 people, and injuring more than 500. Please join my family and me in prayer for the victims, their families, first responders and all those affected by this evil.

Providing Tax Relief for Hurricane Victims

Click above to watch a clip of the tax relief press conference.

Last Thursday, I joined my colleagues in the Texas delegation outside the Capitol to celebrate the House’s passage of H.R. 3823, the Disaster Tax Relief and Airport and Airway Extension Act of 2017. This bill will make hurricane victims’ lives easier by allowing folks to use retirement funds for hurricane-damage repairs without a withdrawal penalty. It also simplifies deductions for personal casualty losses, encourages charitable giving by suspending the deduction limit for hurricane relief contributions and more. Passage of this bill will ease the burden on Texans working to bounce back after Hurricane Harvey. To see my full remarks at the press conference, click here.

Holding Two FEMA Town Halls Last Week

Click above to watch the video of last Friday's FEMA town hall in Port Aransas.

Last week, my office hosted two FEMA town halls. Last Thursday night, my office held a FEMA town hall in Taft, where representatives from FEMA and the Small Business Administration shared information on applying for aid, what to do if rejected, and answered people's questions.

Friday night, I hosted a town hall in Port Aransas, where I was joined by representatives from FEMA, the SBA, the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA), the Texas General Land Office (GLO), and the City of Port Aransas. To watch the town hall in its entirety, please click here. I'm extremely proud of the way that our community has come together in this time of need to take care of one another. As always, if you, or someone you know, needs help, please contact my team of Red Tape Cutters at 361-884-2222.

Introducing the PRO Sports Act

Last week, after a caller to a radio program I was on suggested it, I reintroduced the Properly Reducing Overexemptions For Sports Act or PRO Sports Act. This legislation would exclude major professional sports leagues from qualifying as tax-exempt organizations. This bill continues the work of recently retired Congressman Jason Chaffetz.

Currently, the National Football League (NFL), National Hockey League (NHL), PGA Tour and Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) are registered with the Internal Revenue Service as nonprofit organizations. These organizations together generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue and have been exploiting loopholes to game the system. It’s time we blow the whistle on this foul, and get this bill over the goal line. To read the full text of the bill, click here.
