CORPUS CHRISTI — Before they could even file through the door of U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold’s office Thursday night, constituents began bombarding him with questions on immigration and health care.
His open house in his hometown of Corpus Christi came a day after groups on opposite sides of the immigration debate demonstrated here with petitions, pickets and occasional shouting matches. Farenthold was in Dallas when the demonstrations occurred.
The feedback Farenthold is getting reflects the difficult position of the GOP-controlled House of Representatives, in which members are under pressure to respond to a divergent conservative base.
Democrats contend that growing Hispanic constituencies could push Republican incumbents out of office if they don’t move on immigration reform.
